FIRST NATIONAL ‘TWEETUP’ TAKES PLACE IN AUSTRALIA
Yesterday, Twitter history was made in Australia with the first ever national ‘tweetup’ (twitter meet up) taking place at wagamama noodle bars across the country. Over 250 people took part in the event at wagamama restaurants in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Canberra
For those who have never heard of a tweetup, it’s essentially an offline meeting of people who have met on Twitter, organised entirely via the site. It provides a great way for Twitterers to take social networking to the next level while meeting new contacts and enjoying a few drinks. Over the last few months, tweetups have taken place all over the world in the US, Japan, Singapore, Europe and many more locations, however this was the first national tweetup to be held in Australia
The tweetup at wagamama saw a whole cross section of the population meet up, many of whom would not normally have had the opportunity to mix in the same circles. From lawyers and bankers to teachers, media executives and students, Aussies of all ages and backgrounds met up to chat while enjoying free food and drinks from wagamama’s menu
CEO of wagamama Australia, Mark Rowland, an avid twitter user who uses the company’s account to chat with followers and gain customer feedback, comments, “tweetups are revolutionising the concept of social networking and it’s great we’ve been able to host the first national event in Australia. We’re always on the look-out for innovative ways to communicate with wagamama fans and enhance our restaurant experience, and based on the success of this event, we’ll definitely be holding more tweetups in the future”
Michael Field, a twitter user who attended the tweetup said: “"wagamama was a great venue for a tweetup. The food is fresh, the atmosphere is relaxed and the communal dining tables got everyone chatting. I hope they do it again soon"
